In the 57th minute, Newcastle made it three.

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has assured that his players are aware that the results that they get from their remaining nine fixtures this season will be vital as to whether they avoid relegation this season.

Rafa Benitez says he no concerns about the behaviour of his Newcastle United players ahead of a training camp in Spain.

Shelvey lofted a delightful ball to the Brazilian, who controlled excellently with his chest on the turn and scuffed an effort into the bottom-right corner.

On Newcastle's trip, Benitez added: "We have everything under control".

Five minutes into the second half Newcastle could have had a third.

He made it 2-0 in the 29th after a superb breakaway move as Ayoze Perez raced clear from his own penalty area and laid the ball to Dwight Gayle, who squared it to Kenedy for a simple tap-in from close range. "When you concede an early goal it can have a big impact on the players".

Yet it was Ritchie who put the game beyond doubt with a fine finish. The Scottish global placed a left-footed shot low into the bottom right corner.

Carrillo and Sims did finally test Dubravka in the Newcastle goal but the Magpies had no problem in seeing out a result that will significantly ease the tension on Tyneside.

Southampton rallied to get back into the game but with the wind in their sails, Newcastle controlled possession to see out the game with their clean sheet intact.

Benitez's side are now eight points short of reaching the 40-point mark, which the Spaniard has said will likely secure the club's Premier League status. - Jonjo Shelvey provided two assists in a Premier League game for the fourth time, and first since May 2015 for Swansea against Stoke.
