Brand New Canadian $10 Bill Unveiled

Well, Canada has just flipped the script and featured a $10 Canadian dollar emblazoned with the image of Viola Desmond, a civil rights pioneer in Nova Scotia.

The note - which is also the first in Canada to feature a vertical orientation - is expected to enter into circulation at the end of the year. The bill marks a growing recognition of Desmond's refusal to leave the whites-only section of a Nova Scotia movie theatre back in 1946. "Our family will go down in history - in history, imagine that".

A new face is set to grace our $10 bill and it's a big deal for Canada!

When asked about whether it was appropriate to hide an easter egg behind a bill featuring a civil rights icon, Harrison said that they had a very powerful ceremony on Thursday that honoured the memory of Desmond. She is also the first non-royal woman on a regularly circulating Canadian bank note.

Desmond was removed from the theater, charged and fined for her act.

After refusing to give up her seat, policed dragged her out and jailed her for "defrauding the province of a one-penny tax"-the difference between a ticket for the front of house and the balcony".

"The launch of the bill sends people of African descent the message that Canada is finally accepting us", said executive director of the Black Cultural, Russell Grosse.

According to the Bank of Canada, Desmond's court case was the first known legal challenge against racial segregation brought forward by a black woman in Canada.

"Viola Desmond carried out a singular act of courage", said Isaac Saney, a senior instructor of black studies at Dalhousie University.

Looking to kill time while her auto was being repaired, she stopped by a local movie theatre.

The story of Desmond by and large was unknown for half a century, but in recent years the image of this courageous woman appeared on a stamp, and her name is ferry in Halifax harbour.
