Private plane flying from Sharjah to Istanbul crashes in Iran

Authorities say the Turkish private jet was flying from the United Arab Emirates to Istanbul.

All 11 people on board a Turkish plane that crashed in western Iran have been killed, Iranian media report.

Seven search and rescue teams have been sent to site of the crash to search for the wreckage.

Iran's state-run news agency, quoting Red Crescent, said at least 11 people were on board the small plane.

Three crew members, a woman who is a relative of the company's founding family and 7 of her friends were on board.

Witnesses in a village near the crash claim they saw flames coming from the plane's engine before it crashed, according to Iranian news agency Fars.

Images on social media showed a large plume of black smoke emerging from the Zagros Mountains near Shahr-e Kord in Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari Province.

"We can confirm that a Turkish private jet while passing through our airspace disappeared from the radar and crashed near Shahr-e Kord", a spokesman for Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation told state television.

The plane took off around 4:41 p.m. (1311 GMT; 9:11 a.m. EST) on March 11 and reached a cruising altitude of just over 35,000 feet, according to FlightRadar24, a flight-tracking website. A private company that handles public relations for the Sharjah airfield, the home of low-priced airline Air Arabia, declined to immediately comment to te Associated Press.

The plane was flying from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Istanbul, the report said.
