Trump faces pushback on tariffs but says he won't back down

But the president last night doubled-down on his promises on trade. He urges Trump to refocus efforts on opening overseas markets without imposing "harmful and unnecessary tax increases" on Americans.

Calls for duties on steel and aluminum are nothing new. The source also suggested the anxious to conclude the trade negotiations. The group says in a letter to Trump that the administration should address a glut of Chinese aluminum and target China and other countries that have a history of circumventing trade rules. Shortly after the tariffs were announced, the European Union responded by saying that it was already preparing to levy retaliatory tariffs on American products, including orange juice, bluejeans and Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Trump's pronouncement last week that he would impose the tariffs roiled markets and rankled allies.

President Donald Trump is reaffirming that two close allies of the USA will be affected by his planned import tariffs on steel and aluminum.

EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom told the BBC that Levi's jeans, Harley-Davidson motorbikes, and Bourbon whiskey were on a draft list of United States goods to be taxed. He did not give examples. Some top White House staff were unaware the president was going to roll out these tariffs until he did so on national television.

The European Commission is drafting a list of products upon which it could impose heavy taxes to send "a political message" to Donald Trump if the United States president follows through on plans to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum, a European source said Friday.

Chaos in the Trump White House doesn't usually directly affect Californians' daily lives.

It's the latest indication of resistance to Trump's plan by Republicans in Congress.

Speaking with reporters in Washington Tuesday, Ryan acknowledged there's "abuse occurring" when it comes to the dumping of steel.

Malmstrom said the European Union would wait for the final decision, but added: "We are of course preparing".

Ryan said he has had multiple conversations with Trump about the issue, and that while he would not characterize the discussions, he said the president "knows our view".

Portman, a director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush, also said he thought Trump should "use more of a scalpel approach" than his current approach, adding that he has spoken with some White House officials but not the president himself. While the European Union said it plans to apply 25% tariffs on $3.5 billion of the U.S. imports to the continent, Canada has warned its neighbour of countermeasures.

The president noted to Trudeau that NAFTA now leaves the US with a trade deficit. While China produces almost half of the world's steel, the US only imports roughly two per cent of its steel from the country.
