Napa County Fire captain Chase Beckman says a gunman has taken hostages at a veterans home in California.

As a Fox affiliate reported, the California Department of Veteran Affairs confirmed law enforcement descended on the scene.

Larry Kamer said that his wife, Devereaux Smith, was at the party and told him by phone that the gunman had entered the room quietly, letting some people leave while taking others hostage.

The suspect has reportedly fired multiple shots at officers but there have yet to be any injuries. Pathway Home's program treats veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Veterans Home is built on roughly 600 acres, making it the largest veterans' home in the U.S., Kisser said.

The sheriff's department did not immediately respond to a telephone call from The Associated Press.

The suspect has locked himself in a room with the hostages, and the Napa County Sheriff's office has sent hostage negotiators and a SWAT team to the scene.

Students were rehearsing a play at the home.

Authorities say at one point officers exchanged gunfire with the gunman.

Chiles said that the hostages are Pathway Home Employees, which he described as meaning that they worked at the facility but were not direct employees of the home.

Veteran residents and staff are sheltering in place, Iljana said. An employee at the veterans home told her to close and lock her door. "I hope they are safe and that this gets resolved quickly".

Queen of The Valley Medical Center, a level 3 Trauma Center, is on standby at the hospital prepared to go to the Veterans Home if needed. Residents from the home often golf at the club for free, said Jason Boltt at Vintners.
